Remarks From Your Exec
Fall is here and it looks like it might just stay for a little while. That means that my tomato plants are going to have to go. I hate letting them go! For the first time ever we actually planted tomato plants. My husband gave in and agreed to support my desire for fresh tomatoes. Of course I promised to tend and care for them. I would water them daily and keep the rabbits and bugs away while waiting (hoping) for something to grow. Well, let’s just say it was pretty hot out there this summer. And I am not one to risk my allergy prone self (my excuse anyway) to an excessively hot garden. So, my husband Tom was the one who ended up tending and watering our tiny little plants that I was afraid didn’t stand a chance between the draught filled summer and pesky critters that like to munch on everything we try to grow. Division of Aging Leadership Changes
The Indiana Family and Social Service Agency announced the resignation of Director of the Division of Aging, Steve Smith. Steve had served as the Director since January 2006. He was the State's first Director of the Division of Aging and oversaw the creation of the Options program which has given Hoosier Seniors the ability to stay in their communities through an increase in home and community-based services. HFA-RC Update
The HFA-RC task force is working on draft learning objectives for an Administrator in Training program for Health Facility Administrators for Residential Care. IALFA is working with IAHSA, IHCA, and HOPE with the intention of submitting a joint document to the Health Facility Administrator Board in November.

Money Follows the Person (MFP) Rebalancing Demonstration
The Family & Social Services Administration’s Division of Aging received a demonstration grant from the federal government and is moving closer to implementation. The demonstration is designed to eliminate barriers or mechanisms, whether in the State law, the State Medicaid plan, the State budget, or otherwise, that prevent or restrict the flexible use of Medicaid funds to enable Medicaid-eligible individuals to receive support for appropriate and necessary long-term services in the settings of their choice. Waiver Providers Receive New Procedures Information
Final procedures for reporting deaths and for reporting admissions to nursing facilities involving Medicaid Waiver participants were recently shared with Waiver Provider Communities across the state. IALFA Members may access the flow charts for reporting death, reporting nursing facility admissions, and reporting hospices use on the IALFA Web, Members Only Section.

Early Stage Alzheimer's Booklet Free for Other’s with Like Diagnosis
The National Institute on Aging's Alzheimer's Disease Education and Referral (ADEAR) Center has released a new booklet specifically for people dealing with the beginning stages of dementia. The booklet, called What Happens Next? was developed by the members of an early–stage support group at the Northwestern University Alzheimer's Disease Center in Chicago. [full story]
